The 2020 Ford Escape is all-new this year, completely redesigned with a form factor that’s been brought into the future. The new Escape is longer, lower, wider, and 200 pounds lighter than its predecessor, with strong performance increases across the board. The Ford Edge has been refreshed as early as last year, offering features like dual-zone climate control across all trim levels. The main differentiation between these SUVs is in their size. While both of these SUVs seat five people, the Ford Escape is best described as a small sport utility vehicle, whereas the Ford Edge is a midsize SUV. This translates into the Escape being 8.3-inches shorter overall than the Edge, and 1-inch less wide. Size impacts fuel economy as well, resulting in Escape being slightly superior in this category. The Escape gets six more miles per gallon in the city, and four more on the highway. If horsepower is a primary concern of yours, the 2020 Ford Edge offers better power and torque on most of its models, although the 2.0L Ecoboost engine available on the SEL and Titanium Escape variants yields nearly identical performance to the 2.0L DOHC 16-valve twin-scroll EcoBoost engine that’s available on the standard Edge trims.
The 2020 Ford Edge offers a standard seating experience that’s competitive for the mid-size SUV class. The Edge offers passengers 113.9 cubic feet of space overall, and 73.4 cubic feet of cargo volume available when the rear seats are folded down. The Escape is a little smaller in comparison, with 104.0 cubic feet of passenger volume and 65.4 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the front row. Headroom and legroom are nearly identical in these vehicles, however, with the Escape only coming 0.2-inches shy of the 40.2 inches of available headroom in the front seat. The first-row legroom is also 0.2-inches smaller in the Escape. If you’re worried about your personal space on your daily commute, these cars are tied. Unsurprisingly though, Second-row space is noticeably larger in the Edge, offering 4.5-more inches of shoulder room, and 4.2-inches more hip room in the back seat.
With the new remodel, there aren’t enough new Ford Escapes on the road to say anything conclusive about this car’s reliability. J.D. Power gave Ford Escape a predicted reliability rating of above average (3.5/5), based on past Ford Escape performance, and the technological updates it’s received this year. Ford’s Powertrain warranty covers the Ford Escape for 60,000 miles, or five years, whichever comes first. While there’s no reason to worry about these car’s reliability scores, it can be great to know your dealer has you covered.
